La Toscane est connue pour Florence, Sienne, la zone du Chianti, le Val d’Orcia, la tour de Pise et tant d’autres merveilles. Pourtant il existe aussi une zone méconnue, la Maremme, dans le sud-ouest de la Toscane, en dessous de Grosseto, qui est une sorte de Camargue italienne, sauvage et rebelle, entre terre et mer, qui a longtemps été une terre d’éleveurs à cheval. Cette région propose de nombreuses activités: randonnée dans le parc naturel régional de Maremme, visite de petits villages antiques au sommet des collines, activités aquatiques au promontoire de l’Argentario, wine-tasting à Scansano, ou encore un bain dans les thermes d’eau chaude de Saturnia. Impossible de s’ennuyer!
CAPALBIO
Capalbio est un joli petit village qui se situe à la limite entre la Toscane et le Lazio, à quelques kilomètres de la côte. Perché sur une colline il domine la mer et la campagne environnante. Repère de brigands au cours des siècles, c’est devenu aujourd’hui un lieu recherché pour son calme et sa tranquillité par les Romains (1h15 de trajet en voiture). Capalbio est une excellente porte d’entrée pour visiter la région. Le village est entouré de murailles anciennes sur lesquelles il est possible de se promener en profitant du panorama exceptionnel sur la campagne toscane. Les ruelles piétonnes du centro storico sont très calmes et typiques des petits villages de la région. Je recommande quelques restaurants dont la trattoria Da Carla ou encore Tullio. Depuis quelques années Capalbio produit également de très bons vins, mention spéciale au Caburnio de la Tenuta Monteti et aux excellents vins (rouges et blancs) produits par Monteverro.
A Pescia Fiorentina, à quelques kilomètres de Capalbio se trouve le Giardino dei Tarocchi (le Jardin des Tarots), un parc artistique constitué de sculptures monumentales basées sur les vingt-deux arcanes du jeu de tarot, conçu par Niki de Saint Phalle, aidé notamment par son mari Jean Tinguely, entre 1979 et 1996.
MACCHIATONDA / ANSEDONIA / COSA
Il existe plusieurs possibilités pour aller se baigner de Capalbio, la plus connue étant l’Ultima Spiaggia, prisée par la jet-set romaine, mais néanmoins très agréable hors-saison. Un peu plus au nord, tout de suite après la Réserve naturelle du Lac de Burano (Oasis WWF) permettant d’observer de nombreux oiseaux, se trouve la plage de Macchiatonda, plus calme et familiale, qui permet de profiter de la longue plage de sable de cette côte encore très sauvage. En continuant vers le nord on arrive à Ansedonia qui abrite une ancienne colonie romaine de la côte Tyrrhénienne sous le nom de Cosa, très agréable à visiter et offrant un très beau panorama sur la lagune d’Orbetello et le Promontoire de l’Argentario.
ORBETELLO / ARGENTARIO
Toujours plus au nord on trouve Orbetello qui fait partie de l’une des rares presqu’île à double tombolo naturel (un cordon littoral de sédiments reliant deux étendues terrestres) au monde. Le tombolo nord est habité et cultivé, tandis que le tombolo sud est boisé. Au centre un isthme en partie artificiel accueille la cité d’Orbetello. Il y a de nombreuses églises à visiter à Orbetello, dont la Cathédrale d’Orbetello (Santa Maria Assunta) qui vaut le coup d’oeil, c’est aussi un point de passage pour visiter le Promontoire de l’Argentario, dont les deux principales villes sont Porto Ercole (où est mort le peintre Caravage en 1610 probablement du paludisme) et Porto Santo Stefano.
CALA DEL GESSO
Cala del Gesso est une crique qui se trouve sur la côte ouest du Promontoire de l’Argentario et qui fait face à l’île du Giglio (malheureusement connue pour le naufrage du Costa Concordia en 2012). Cette crique est particulièrement difficile d’accès, ce qui la rend vraiment spéciale. Elle est néanmoins très prisée des touristes en été, et vu sa taille réduite cela peut vite devenir la cohue. Je conseille donc de s’y rendre très tôt le matin ou bien en fin de journée pour profiter du coucher de soleil, et surtout de prévoir le ravitaillement car une fois arrivé en bas il n’y a pas de bars. Attention il faut garder des forces pour la remontée qui est tout de même assez raide.
TALAMONE
Talamone est une ville d’origine étrusque qui se trouve au nord d’Orbetello. Elle fut le théâtre de la bataille qui vit la victoire des Romains sur les Celtes en 225 av. JC. Elle fut ensuite rasée par Sylla afin de punir ses citoyens du soutien qu’ils avaient apporté à Caius Marius lors de sa marche sur Rome à son retour de son exil africain. Plus récemment elle vit passer l’expédition des Mille de Garibaldi qui, en 1860, y fit étape afin de s’approvisionner en armes et eau. Elle a également servi de décor au film de James Bond 007 – Quantum of Solace en 2008. C’est un petit port très charmant qui est aussi le point de départ le plus méridional du Parc Naturel Régional de la Maremme.
PARC NATUREL REGIONAL DE LA MAREMME (MARINA ALBERESE)
Le Parc Naturel Régional de la Maremme qui s’étend de Talamone (au sud) à Marina Alberese (au nord) est un petit paradis qui se visite à pied, en vélo ou par la mer et offre un concentré de nature sauvage exceptionnel. De nombreuses randonnées permettent de découvrir le parc et d’apprécier la faune (sangliers, renards, chevreuils, buffles, flamands roses…) et la flore de la région. Il est possible d’accéder directement à la mer en voiture à Marina Alberese, mais seulement hors-saison. L’été des trajets en bus sont organisés à partir du village d’Alberese.
SCANSANO
Scansano est un village qui se trouve dans les terres à une vingtaine de kilomètres d’Alberese. Le village est connu dans toute l’Italie pour la production du vin rouge DOCG (Dénomination d’origine contrôlée et garantie) Morellino di Scansano. De nombreuses caves à visiter pour des dégustations mais aussi un joli centro storico sur la route en direction des thermes de Saturnia.
TERME DI SATURNIA (CASCATE DEL MULINO)
Dernière étape de ce périple en Maremme: les thermes de Saturnia. Les eaux thermales à plus de 37°C qui s’écoulent sur une chute d’eau à côté d’un vieux moulin au lieu-dit ‘Cascate del Mulino‘ permettent de passer un moment détente en contemplant les collines toscanes dans un cadre de rêve. C’est certainement l’une des expériences les plus particulières que vous pourrez vivre dans la région. Comme souvent il est conseillé d’arriver tôt afin de profiter de l’endroit, mais étant donné que c’est gratuit et ouvert toute l’année vous pouvez aussi venir la nuit pour passer un moment inoubliable.
